Technique and Terms

Specializing in dogs of all breeds, Capstick works in copper, utilizing the warmth and antiquing quality of the metal to show the markings and structure of each animal.  Numerous drawings are completed for the subject and then transferred onto copper.  working with dental and wood tools the artwork is pressed alternately, from the front and back, to develop the depth and realism so evident in Capstick's finished work.  Once completed , it is antiqued and sealed with numerous coats of acrylic to prevent the oxidation of the copper.  Because each artwork is individually handicraft and with the variations of chemical reactions of the metal, every piece is a unique work of art.  Each finished artwork is matted, glazed with glass or framers acrylic and completed with a stunning metal frame.

REPOUSSE':  the ancient technique in which a malleable metal is shaped by hammering or pressing on the reverse side.  French word to "push back".

BAS RELIEF:  a sculptural carving or embossing in which the form extends only slightly from the background without undercuts.

ANTIQUING:  the copper color is changed through chemical reactions and buffing.
